Living in Antrim

Antrim is a historic market town on the north-eastern shore of Lough Neagh, the largest freshwater lake in Britain and Ireland. Located just 14 miles north-west of Belfast, the town combines genuine heritage character with outstanding transport connections. The wider Antrim area encompasses Templepatrick, Randalstown, Crumlin, Toomebridge, and Dunadry, each offering their own appeal.

The town's transport links are among its strongest assets. The M2 motorway provides fast, direct access to Belfast, and Antrim railway station offers hourly services reaching Belfast in approximately 25 minutes. Crucially, Belfast International Airport at Aldergrove is just 6 miles from the town centre (roughly 10 minutes by car), making Antrim particularly attractive to frequent travellers. The A6, progressively upgraded to dual carriageway, connects onward to Derry/Londonderry.

Antrim Castle Gardens and Clotworthy House are the jewel of the town, a 400-year-old landscape restored with £6 million of Heritage Lottery funding. The gardens feature 17th-century Anglo-Dutch canals, formal avenues, and a Victorian Pleasure Garden. On the shores of Lough Neagh, Antrim Lough Shore Park and Rea's Wood National Nature Reserve offer walking, cycling, and birdwatching. The Junction retail and outlet park provides extensive shopping, and Antrim Forum (recently upgraded with £1.5 million investment) delivers a modern leisure centre with pool, gym, spa, and athletics facilities.

Antrim Grammar School is consistently ranked among Northern Ireland's top post-primary schools, and Parkhall Integrated College offers excellent non-selective education on a shared campus. The property market offers strong value compared to Belfast, with a wide range of detached and semi-detached family homes, and the surrounding villages provide the option of a more rural lifestyle while remaining well connected.
