Area Guide

Living in Carrickfergus & Greenisland

Carrickfergus is County Antrim's oldest town, founded in 1177 when the Anglo-Norman knight John de Courcy built his castle on the "Rock of Fergus" overlooking Belfast Lough. That castle, one of the best-preserved Norman fortifications in Ireland, still dominates the waterfront today and gives Carrickfergus a sense of history and identity that few commuter towns can match. Greenisland, a distinct settlement 3 miles to the south-west, sits at the foot of Carn Hill and retains a village character of its own.

The area's commute to Belfast is one of the easiest in Northern Ireland. The Belfast to Larne railway line runs through the heart of both settlements, with four stations serving the area: Greenisland, Clipperstown, Carrickfergus, and Downshire. Half-hourly trains reach Belfast in approximately 24 minutes. By road, the A2 Shore Road puts Belfast city centre just 11 miles away.

Carrickfergus Marina is a standout feature: a 300-berth facility with 5 Gold Anchor and Blue Flag status, surrounded by restaurants, a cinema, and the Carrickfergus Sailing Club. The seafront promenade and Marine Gardens provide pleasant walks with views across Belfast Lough to the North Down coast. The Knockagh Monument above Greenisland, the largest war memorial in Northern Ireland, offers panoramic views and popular hilltop walks. Nearby Whitehead adds Victorian seaside charm, the Gobbins cliff path, and heritage railway excursions.

Schools are well served by Carrickfergus Grammar School, Ulidia Integrated College, and Carrickfergus Academy, which collaborate as the Carrickfergus Learning Community to offer a broad sixth-form curriculum. The property market spans affordable terraces and starter homes through to detached family houses, with particular demand in Upper Greenisland and the areas close to the marina and waterfront.
