Area Guide

Living in Coleraine & Antrim Coast

Coleraine is one of Ireland's oldest settlements and the principal gateway to the Causeway Coast, one of the most spectacular stretches of coastline in the British Isles. The town sits at the lowest bridgeable point of the River Bann and serves as the commercial and administrative centre for the wider Causeway Coast and Glens district. The broader area takes in the coastal towns of Portstewart, Portrush, Castlerock, Bushmills, Ballycastle, and Cushendall, each with a distinct character.

This is a university town, home to the 300-acre Ulster University campus on the banks of the River Bann, which brings a steady population of students and staff and supports local services, culture, and the rental market. Coleraine railway station is a key junction on the NI Railways network, with regular services to Belfast, Derry/Londonderry, and Portrush. The A26 connects to the M2 motorway, putting Belfast approximately one hour away. City of Derry Airport is 30 miles to the west.

The attractions within reach of Coleraine are world-class. The Giant's Causeway (UNESCO World Heritage Site), Dunluce Castle, Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge, Old Bushmills Distillery, Mussenden Temple, the Dark Hedges, and Royal Portrush Golf Club (host of The Open Championship in 2019 and 2025) are all on the doorstep. Portstewart Strand, a two-mile National Trust Blue Flag beach, and the surfing beaches of Portrush add to a lifestyle that is hard to match anywhere in Northern Ireland.

The property market is diverse, ranging from town houses and terraces in Coleraine to premium coastal homes in Portstewart and Portrush, holiday let investments, and spacious rural properties in the surrounding countryside. The strong tourism economy, driven by world-class attractions and events like The Open, creates significant demand for both permanent homes and short-term holiday accommodation. For schools, Coleraine Grammar School, Loreto College, and the new £46 million Northern Regional College Causeway Campus (opened October 2024) serve the area well.
